Personally I don't have a problem with the way the game looks at all.
If you want to get an idea of what se5 will look like, go to
www.malfador.com and check out starfury. Apparently much of Starfury's code will be used in se5. Also, talk really nicely to David Gervais on this forum - he has worked with Aaron on other projects and might end up having something to do with se5.
Finally... why don't you do it? Almost all the graphics in se5 (the ships, the maps, most of the interface, the icons...) are stored as bmps to be freely editted. There's nothing to stop someone creating a full graphics mod for the game.
