Good question, and one that probably deserves its own thread. I'm afraid I can't give you a particularly good answer.
I can tell you that the amount of work will vary hugely from mod to mod, and that in some cases it is possible to run a small patching program to make an AI compatible. To make it compatible and competitive in most mods will require considerably more work again.
