This is a very rare event, and I've never had it happen to one of my systems. I've heard you will get 2 years (20 turns) warning to evacuate the system.
(Just don't miss that one turn on PBW! You don't continuously get Messages on each subsequent turn!)

I believe the star explodes and becomes a nebula, destroying all the planets in the system.
