The AI is using fleets! I am in a new game (High/High/Medium) with 3000 racial points. My race has gas giants and I started with three systems of 2 huge planets EACH! I thought... short game.

No way! While I am ahead in *points* I am having a great fight. I have the Xi'chung hive on one side and the EA on the other. AND (drum roll) the AI is using FLEETS! Plus it is building mine fields with over 50 mines, plus using fighters, plus using point defense, plus using sweepers. I have had over 3 fleets of at least 20 ships per fleet show up and attack my quadrants... it's fantastic!

This only happened after I installed the newest mod-pack. A HUGE thank you and now I gotta go... my planets are burning....
