I am with you Taera in that I don't like doing a bunch of tech trading in games either. And you are correct that refusing to trade colony tech puts you at a disadvantage, but this is not wrong or right. It is simply a fact.
If this fact bothers you then you should either trade techs, or limit your games to those in which tech trading is disallowed.
