Did that scene strke anyone else as being a deliberate "copy" of the scene in once one of the Star Wars movies where Luke climbs up a rope to take out an ATAT?
That did come to mind for me as well actually. Is that scene not in the books?

Yes, I understand teh need for transition when dealing with a story of this length. And to be fair part two didn't feel that akward when I saw it. It did seem to fit the transitional phase quite well at the time. But somehow, after seeing part 3, part 2 changed from feeling transitional more into something that felt redundant.
Perhaps if I saw all three in close order instead of months between them I will see it differently. I'll have to try and watch them all togehether some day once all the DVD's are out.
