I think that that comment was more of an "I'm not sure what I'll do yet", and fighters can't go through WPs.

You may just want to copy components & only allow them on your new hull (as a ship)

Fighter engines may be too small for a 50KT ship, and you probably want better ranged weapons, intermediate shields, etc.
