Creating a "Science Lab" or "Spy Lab" component in the component files doesn't work. Oh I can create it, assign it, make a pretty picture, put it in my ships, all that. It just doesn't actually do anything because the "Point Generation: Research" or "Intelligence" ability isn't valid for components.

Is there a way to MAKE it valid for components?

Please pitch your answers to the level of someone who can, just barely, alter a text file without destroying their hard drive.

You cannot add this ability to components. It is something that modders have wanted for along time now but it still has not been implemented. Research and Intel points can only be generated strickly by facilities in the current game.
