This is when the lining of the aorta rips, without tearing open and spilling into the appropriate cavity, and the vessel swells up like a ballon. And then it does rip.

Yep, it was a ruptured aorta, bleeds into the thoracic cavity, but he still lives. (quite a surprise to us aswell, we didn't think it would be bleeding/ruptured, just enlarged and ruptures in the internal vessel wall)
