Download my mod in the Scenario/Mod forum. Give it a try with the recommended settings. Even with a Low AI bonus it is really QUITE difficult. The AI is generally hostile and can easily outproduce you with the bonuses it has. Its can be a tough exercise in problem solving to survive the early game.
Also, another thing I've done to make it more challenging is to put the Victory Condtions on 'Winning player has 200% of the 2nd place player' with a minimum turn requirement of 10.0 years. This ensures that the player has to hustle and go to war with AI players who may be out in the lead early. It keeps the humans from building up and 'pearl harboring' the enemy late in the game as easily...ie, if you wait TOO long, the AI will win before you strike.
