Basically, they just provide more hitpoints & block weapons, so your militia survives longer!
I'd suggest adding some armor or a shield on your unarmed units. The price won't go up much, and you'll get them to survive a
lot more damage. The combat will end in a stalemate, and next turn, any dead militia will be back, and can continue the fight against the enemy.
when I say a lot more, I mean, with a small shield III, Sixty-Five TIMES more damage
