Taz, in game hit the 'G' key to show the grid. The symptoms you describe for #2 may be your ship has left the grid. aim your ship inward and you will eventually return to real space.

If you were not out of bounds, try lowering the 'Stelar Detail' in the game options. Those nebulae can severly slow the game when in high detail. Even on fast systems.

P.S. as for the CD speed Demon, Aaron has addressed this in the latest beta patch. He is planning to get the 'Official Patch' out by the end of this week.
