The neat thing about the ablative armor as I set it, is that it provides 50% more hitpoints than a shield generator but takes much longer to repair than standard armor types (since its divided into 1kT segments, you have 10 times the # of components to repair).
Its too bad that the emissive ability is so screwed up. Otherwise, that armor would be really cool.
