I'm sorry if this has been asked and addressed elsewhere on in the forums, but here goes:

I started playing the demo the other day (no experience what-so-ever with DOM I). So I followed the, very brief, quick start. Shortly after starting, an earthquake destroyed my temple.

Is it a limitation of the demo that I can't build a temple? Every unit only had the option to destroy the two buildings in the province. Or do I need a priest in order to build a temple (which would seem silly to me, that'd be like saying the only way to build a college would be to have a college-educated person when there are no colleges yet )?

Anyway, I appreciate whatever help there is to be had on the question.
Yep need a priest to build a temple and a mage to build a lab. Though your pretender should be able to build a temple, I don't know why they are not allowed to (at least in Dom1 this was the case).

Earthquake on the first turn really sucks, I got it too, and if not for the fact that I had recruited a priest I would have been unable to build any temples ever!

Not so, you can still make someone your prophet, and once you do, he gains priest powers and can build temples.

There are also some mercenary priests - Giuseppe del Migo, for example - and you can hire one of them and have him build a temple.

There is a third solution that isn't available in the demo - some summoned creatures have priest powers and can build temples. (Harbinger, Archangel (of the Host) and Couatl are the only ones I know of in Dom I, but there may be more in Dom II.)

Similarly you need a mage to build a lab, and need a lab to recruit a mage - but your god is usually a mage and can build labs. Also there are a lot more mercenary mages than mercenary priests. Summoning doesn't help because you would need a mage to summon anything. But for lack of mages there is a fourth solution - empowerment. If you have enough gems or blood slaves you can make any commander a mage.

Finally, for completeness, any commander can build a fortress.
