I'll get that if I try to load an incompatible mod save game.

Eg. Pirates & nomads. There are three extra advanced traits (for normal, pirate & nomad) any game that was not saved under P&N will give that error.

A similar error occurs if you try to load a race that has an invalid settings.
I even got "unable to load" when I'd mistyped something in the facility.txt file.

Are you using a mod? Have you ever been using a mod?
MM may have reduced the # of components or something, & now you have a "component #256" on a ship, but there are only 250 components in the game.
