If the climate there is very hot, that might be a clue that Abysia or Machaka aren't very far. Or that there's a Banefire Braziers or Plain of Perpetual Drought site in the province.

I too think the scales of a province should be displayed if you have a scout or spy there. These guys are supposed to gather intel for you, they should notice if the locals are industrious or lazy (production/sloth), if the cattle is healthy and the flora abundant (growth) or if corpses litter the landscape (death). Likewise, in a magical universe, I expect even mundane scouts to feel the ambient magic - just like in our scientific universe, you've not to be a rocket scientist to notice the differences between a modern hospital in Los Angeles and a shaman's hut in the Kalahari.
