This just happened in Dominions 1 with Pangaea:
I had been attacked by a monstrous Manticore, which had 5 Astral, 4 Earth and 2 Air. It started battle by casting Invulnerability, followed by either Body Ethereal or Luck. I had driven it away, and thought it had retreated into capital of Arcoschepale just a small fight to the west. So I collceted my Cross-bred forces, gave them all the Maenads I had to spare and went after Arcos. It wasn't until I had their capital besieged that their pretender was a Master druid. Then I remembered that the Manticore had been pretender of Vanheim, and that he must have died in the retreat.
Now I started to finish Arcoschepale. I managed to lose my army of poison spitting crossbred, including 3 basilisks, because Arco had only 3 commanders and handful of poison-immune Mandragoras. They slaughtered my Minotaurs, and my starving spider-thingies decided to run away. I'm not very proud of that battle. After pondering a little, I decided I would change tactics. Taking some summoned wolves and remaining spidermen, together with 3 Dracolions and 2 Cockatrices, and just letting them all to slaughter the three mages forming the army of Arco (mandragoras had all been destroyed the turn before). Orokestes the Eunuch and the pretender Master Druid died in the first round to the bites of angry wolves, and the remaining native mage second turn. Astrologer's Body Ethereal could not save him from the mouths of crippled, badly hurt Dracolions. All three had cast Ritual of Returning on themselves, but that was of no help.
Now I should mention that I had given Soul Contract to a Pandemoniac the turn before. As excepted, a devil had appeared to my citadel in Pangaea. But what kind of a devil! First, it was a commander. I checked, no, there was no devil in the garrison, so this had to be a gift from the Infernal Lord. Now I checked the devil. Imagine my surprise when I saw
Orokestes the Devil before me! Orokestes, with all his magics (FAEW2S3H) and both items he had died with! (enhchanted pike, endless wineskin)
Not a bad gift, eh?
( I have no idea about why this happened, check the thread "Strange Bug in Dom1", it might have some answers. )
