There is a Unique sword whose name escapes me at the moment which boosts priest level +1 for all purposes (preaching etc.)
If you want a higher level priest *in combat only* (for smiting purposes or whatever), Communions *DO WORK* on priests, so you can go with that. I sometimes do, it is great fun. This will not help you with preaching, of course.
