Actually, I wasn't going to. I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt re: "in general having a clue".

I don't think the wrong mode would have truncated the file like that. Well, possibly if it hit the right character combo. But it's likelier to be something else. 12.498mb strikes me as a suspiciously roundish number.
