That is great for R'lyeh, since the slower the oponent is, the more likely he is to be paralyzed by the time your land units face him...
Cavalry can be slightly tough, but not really a big deal.
Try Triton Shark Knights. Who wins? All of a sudden, those indie provinces with knights seem like complete "cake"... and they are.

*shrug* I'm never all that scared by Tritons to be honest. Placing a big enough contingent of Lobos around your illithid makes it hard for the tritons to get to the center.
Frankly, going to land too early imo puts R'lyeh at a huge disadvantage as it's overextended against a number of foes that want to see it dead, dead, dead. Reinforcements take too long coming unless your capital is right next to that part of the landmass, in which case you've got another set of problems. I tend to find that it's better to consolidate the water, eliminate Atlantis if necessary, Voice of Tiamat/Akashic Record out ALL the gems in the ocean and then wait and build. Don't come to land before you need to.
But others might put more stock in the zergling rush. Well, I'm no expert... that's for sure! I think it's just playstlye differences... but my feeling is that it takes the land guys quite a while before they're ready to go underwater, so you can wait before you take those. I'd rather get my foothold on land ASAP, as that's where the richest provinces and best independent mages are. And the Starspawn need money to really get rolling...
Illithids can only be recruited underwater, that's true... but that's what Gateway is for.
I have yet to play an MP game with Atlantis in it though, so I'm not sure how that would affect things...
