In the games I've been in the ability of the players and who they decide to attack and gang up on plays a far larger role in who wins than what nations have been picked. You can be the best player with the best nation and if the rest of the players gang up on you, you're in trouble. I haven't played many (probably any) games where all the players were of about equal skill and knew each other well, though.

That makes sense to me. People love to gang up on Ermor but given the right map, players, and settings it isn't exceptionally hard to turn them into a powerhouse.
