I think that the bonus has more to do with stopping the attackers from breaking the door down, than actual fighting.

A defence bonus of 2, for example, would count as 2 extra men, when defending against a siege. So one ulmish guardian has the same effect (at repairing walls) as 3 normal men.

I could be wrong though
