On the add/view profile, click on the "select a different avatar image" link. It brings up a small window with lots of avatars you can page through. Click on one to select it, then press the "select this avatar" button, and you should be all set.
Hmm. Rereading what you wrote... Do you not get the separate window with the avatars? Are you maybe blocking popups of have your cookie settings too tight or something?
