This is not true. If you place your commanders at the very back, Illithids will usually Mind BLast mindless units up front. Also, Spirit Mastery is a great summons - the units are throw-away (10 for 4 death gems), but are not mindless and will soal up Illithids bLasts.
What I listed is one of the tips the developers provide which appears between turns. You can go argue with them.
