Really? I seem to remember a post from the devs a long time ago that this wouldn't work and that if the squad routs, they will dissolve. Are you sure that the battle Lasted long enough to allow for this to happen? They hardly dissolve right away when, e.g., all undead commanders die either, it takes time.
