Well, if you look at the size of an actual battlefield, there's only room for about 8000 units for both sides, if all of the units are Longdead Hoburgs. This number starts to fall dramatically if you're using, say, a mix of longdeads, soulless, ghouls, and longdead horse.

Now you have to divide this result in half to get the number that can fit for ONE side. Naturally, I strongly suspect that if more than about 2000 units are brought to a single battle, Bad Things Happen.
