Nvidia provides good, though closed, drivers for Linux. Nvidia-card are widely regarded as the only way to go in Linux for games, though ATI are catching up fast.
There are no real open alternative. Video cards are steeped in braindead patents; it'll be years and years before OS finally conquers this corner of the computer world.
