The nation overview (F1) manages this quite well, only I find some paths' colors (fire, some other) hard to see from the background.
Too bad that clicking on the mage in the overview doesn't select that mage though. Makes it a pain if you have a lot of mages in one province (researching, forging, summoning, etc), especially if renaming isn't turned on and you have 5 with the same name.
