The gold is nice, but I've been even happier with the magic items and mages that appear sometimes, especially when they are things which were not things I could directly get, or would be expensive. E.g.:

* Animist with wolves
* old scholar guy
* soul contract
* pocket ship
* phoenix rod
* heroes
