The funny yellow thing is the bridge to the ship, Narf. So it does serve a purpose to the crew...  
That portion of the ship reminds me of US battleships/cuisers/any sea going vessal with their bridges...

The yellow part still looks silly. A ful set would be great, just get rid of that yellow part. Assume they have viewscreens or something, maybe.
