You also have my condolences. It is amazing how quickly we can grow attached to our pets. My wife got me a dog for our anniversary, and I never really realized how much I love him until we came home and found the front door wide open and our dog gone. Of course, knowing his personality, I was assuming we had been robbed and he had tagged along with the thieves.
The only damage he'd do if someone broke in is causing them to trip when they turned around.

Unfortunately, this is usually true. It is worthwhile to occasionally stop and spend some time thinking through what is important to us.
