Your pretender was probably killed in that battle, immediately restored as a Soulless Warrior by the power of Ankh, and killed once more. And as you pretender was killed in his undead form, the recalling brought it back.
IIRC, same thing happens with Twiceborned and Transformed pretenders - they keep their new form past death and Calling.
