The question that I have is if the AI would use these properly. In all likelyhood your "satellite group" would run out to meet an attacking fleet instead of staying near the planet. So, it would just get killed and not help to defend your planet anymore than if it had been stationary and left on the wrong side by the 'random' placement routine.
