This won't work for Talismans, since there is only one level of them, but it applies to other techs. If you analyze a ship that has several components of the same family but of different levels, you will get multiple tech levels from it. Say you have no Projectile Weapons technology and you are given a ship with a DUC I, DUC II, DUC III, DUC IV and a DUC V. If you analyze it, you will get all 5 levels of Projectile Weapons. This will not work if you have 5 DUC Vs, which will only give you one tech level per ship. But with actually different components, you get the multiple levels at once.
