Likely, the problem is the AI design minister trying to build something illegal.
If an AI causes a RangeCheckError, then you will not see any indication, and the game will effectively freeze.
I had that happen in P&N v2.0, when the AIs decided to use 40 super solar sails, and the propulsion count went above 256.
If you describe your new component, I can probably guess the solution.
