Not sure it applies but cats on a farm are usually good sense. They're more of useful animal instead of a pet (though that doesn't mean people don't get attached to them). Cats in a more domestic setting (which is what I'm used to) have a bad habit of crawiling under the car in the driveway or near the motor when they are left outside and its cold. Cats just "get in the way" sometimes and require an "extra eye".
I no longer let my cats go outside (and haven't done so for over 20 years).
