Default Switch sides

I had started a brand new game of SEIV, just to play without having notepad open and writing down what happened and random ideas. I'd played a decent(ish) number of turns when I noticed that there was only actually one AI player.

Got into a strong position where I knew I was going to win, or about the point I normally get distracted, but instead decided to swap sides with the AI and see if I could dig myself out of the hole. Quite a challenge chucking DUC III frigates at DUC V destroyers and missile cruisers, but alot more fun. So I pushed on until I recognised I was a jump and a few planets away from my old home system, then swapped back.

I'm currently trying to refit the fleet to decent (in my opinion) designs, quell massed riots and balance a ruined economy... I haven't enjoyed a game of SEIV this much for a while

Anyone done anything similar?
