I gave the avatar more thought based on your insightfull comments and came up with this...
A man of deep thought, fully aware that mankind was not easily defined by right and wrong, black and white, or truth and lies. A man who saw mankind as a constantly shifting fog with moments of clarity and blinding darkness...
My guess is this is closer, but you might be looking for something more abstract like what Gandalf has suggested.
Anyway, I do enjoy making these.
