Yes, I`d love to do historical stuff, but as has already being said, the amount of historical research involved can (i imagine) become a problem to do a really good job if working on your own.
Playing around with "what-ifs" allow the player, and the designer to explore all sorts of situations. The "fun" factor is a key issue. Not saying historical stiff is not fun, I hasten to add
