Only first edition CDs were 2.02: my own starts at 2.08, some started at 2.06, and current CDs may have other patches.
You should be able to use the 2.16 patch on any version however: what OS are you using? Did you try the 2.15 patch? (Look up the Dominions MP guide on how to get it, as it is no longer available from Shrapnel's main download page)
