That's exactly what I'm looking for. And I prefer the 1d4 idea:
1 - Fire
2 - Electricity
3 - Cold
4 - Acid
But a 1d6 with perhaps a two-effect on a 6 would be interesting, although that'd push a level 5 spell by a bit.
