Well, you can press Enter to quickly bring up the chat window (if it's not already up), and Escape to dismiss the chat window (if it is up).

Also, the v1.20 patch will have some features to help w/ the critical mass problem, but a large part of that is that relatively few people have bought the game. Once we get reviews in some of the bigger magazines/websites, that should help bring in customers, and fill the lobby with more people in turn.
