what error comes up, which might allow people to give advice / help, does this mean you're dropping out of the game?

Considering that you're on dialup and were already having problems downloading it, and the game is supposed to start today, I'm guessing that it doesn't really matter now, but you
had over a week in which you could've downloaded the map.
