Sure if people were farming dogs then the calorie efficiency might be a factor. Given the large number of strays and dogs that are put to sleep you might as well do something with them, why not lunch?
And to Kamog: Dogs are no friend of mine. And with an attitude like that you'll never make a polar explorer.
