Did you do any airstrikes on the first turn, or was there any preplanned artillery fire at all? Airplanes might have spotted the dump, and a bug with the artillery fire routine might have uncovered it also. Also, if the ammo dump is located on high ground, it wouldn't be surprising if you could see it all the way across the map.
