Re: I question the competence of the AI at times.
Better diplomatic AI is something I've always hoped and hoped future versions of SE would have. A full-blown politically savvy AI--rather than 3D graphics or detailed ground combat--would make the game even closer to perfect than it already is.
I want to negotiate meaningful treaties, establish dynasties, deal with political intrigue within my own empire... I want the illusion that I am running a government and dealing with alien governments.
Years ago I used to play Romance of the Three Kingdoms 2. During one game I married off a daughter to a rival warlord, causing his hostility to drop sharply. He accepted my gifts, offered gifts to me, and sent troops to help me against enemies. His behaviour was so realistic I felt as if I was playing against a human. Eventually he died, and his kingdom fragmented as his generals fought each other. Some allied with me, some became neutral, some allied against me.
This is the sort of fascinating gameplay I would like SE to provide.
