Those are called 'glandes'. They were made from lead. Celsus, the author of "De Medicina", included instructions for removing glandes from wounded soldiers. The size of the slingstones varied with the ages;
http://www.christiananswers.net/dictionary/sling.html shows a nice picture where two larger slingstones from Bronze Age, a tennis ball and a smaller, Hellenistic one are next to each other.
They haven't been changed in Dom3, but shortbows are very good especially in the Early Age. Slingers might be worth their price if no shortbows were available.
