I love Wilmington. The downtown area is beautiful and there are so many beaches nearby. If I could live where I'd like, there's no question it would be in Wilmington. I do miss those days when there was free public beach access at Carolina and Kure, though. Too many people around now to have that. Oh yeah, and when you could drive on Kure at night hours (for free!) as well. Those days are sorely missed. I blame all the people from the lesser states, wanting to move in and ruin our lifestyle.
