Also, be aware that with the release of SEV, it is extremely unlikely that new features will be added to SEIV. I think there may be some possiblitiy of a final bugfix release, but I think a patch containing new features is insanely improbable.
In the meantime, try playing
Proportions mod. While the loss of a homeworld doesn't necessarily spell doom for an empire in that mod, homeworlds are incredibly important. If you're playing against the AI, you'll get better results from one of the 2.X versions than the newer 3.0 versions. If you're looking for human opponenets, I believe there's a slot going in "galactical realism" on PBW - it's a v3 Proportions game that has only just started.
