Hi
No I don’t have DirectX 4, but I agree the way Dxdiag shows the DirectX version can be slightly confusing.
Version Number: 4.09.0000.0902
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0b
DirectX info found here:
http://www.computerhope.com/directx.htm
However I found a solution to this problem:
In the Game Options I changed “Show Introduction” from Yes to No and now can I start the game without any problems.
Merry Christmas

Strange - as the splash screen uses DirectShow, which is rather old tech.
The only thing I can think is that one of the splash screen images is corrupt or you may have disk corruption.
Try opening the splashscreen pics in the game data\pictures\interface folder and see if any have errors?. Also - a run of scandisk may clear up any lost clusters etc.
Cheers
